From the Principal's Desk...
It is hard to believe that we are in the final weeks of the 2018/2019 school year. It always amazes me how quickly the school year seems to go. Students are busy preparing for final exams and Provincial Achievement Tests. Everyone is engaged in year-end field trips, events and pushing to finish the curriculum. I am exceptionally proud of how our students have demonstrated growth in literacy this year and I want to thank our volunteers, educational assistants, and teachers who have been very dedicated to literacy instruction and intervention where needed. I want to encourage students and families to read every day and talk about what is being read over the summer. Make sure to schedule visits to the school/community library.
June is always a month of transitions for students and staff alike. This year even more so with changes to our school's grade configuration. Our high school students will be moving to new schools next year and beginning a new chapter in their lives. Faculty changes also occur every June. This year staffing and planning for next year are occurring very late due to the provincial election with no provincial budget being released to school boards until fall. School budgets across all Elk Island Public Schools are being prepared conservatively to allow for unknown changes to provincial funding this fall. At Andrew, we will have to reduce our administrative, teaching and classified staff numbers. We also have probationary and temporary contract teachers that will not know their status until late June. In Elk Island Public Schools, all probationary positions get posted in the spring which allows for contractual obligations to any staff in EIPS that are returning from leaves or have been declared surplus at their school. Once all the contractual obligations are met for continuing contract staff, administrators are able to proceed with offering contracts to probationary and temporary contract staff. I will be sending out a newsletter in the upcoming weeks with any staff announcements and changes.
The one thing that is constant is change. We appreciate the memories and experiences we have created this school year and embrace the new adventures that lie ahead of us.

School Library News – by Ms. Forst
Parents, please have a look around the house, vehicles and anywhere else that your child(ren) may have taken their books to. I will send out reminder notices to students that still have books out, and the last day to return library books to the library is Friday, June 14th. Any items that are not returned will be considered lost and a note and/or invoice will be sent home stating the title and costs to replace, this includes textbooks. Any items that are not paid for or returned by the end of June will then be added to your child’s account in the office and will show as an additional charge on your school fees. If you have any questions about a book or item that you cannot locate, please stop in at the library, call or email me. I am here to help you and your child(ren). I wish everyone a relaxing and restful summer…see you in the fall.
Lost and Found
Please make sure to check the lost and found container in the front foyer area prior to the end of the school year. Any items remaining after the final day of school will be donated.
Tools for School
Andrew School has once again partnered with the United Way for the 2019-20 Tools for School campaign. Annually, Tools for School provides backpacks and school supplies to students in kindergarten through Grade 12 whose families have limited resources. If you’re a parent or know a parent who needs access to the program, contact our school directly. We’ll discretely provide the backpack to your child at the beginning of the 2019-20 school year.
Alternatively, if you’d like to donate to the program, you can pick up a few extra supplies when you’re out shopping for back to school. Drop-off boxes are located at various businesses in the community during the summer months—including Staples and EIPS Central Services office. All supplies donated within our community are invested back into our region.
For more information about Tools for School, contact Marie Andruchow or call the EIPS Central Services at 780-464-3477.

Little Elk Island Adventure: Registration
Elk Island Public Schools is once again running Little Elk Island Adventure, a fun and informative program for first-time school bus riders.
Annually, Student Transportation offers the Little Elk Island Adventure to new riders and their parents. The program’s aim is to help ease any anxieties a family may have about riding the bus before even starting school. Through a series of activities, riders learn about school bus safety, danger zones, tips on boarding and how to sit properly on the bus. After that, both the children and parents hop on the bus to practice what they’ve learned and then venture out on a short ride.

Public Library News
Summer is just about here and, to some people, summer means catching up on those great new reads. With the school being closed over the summer, the hours we are open to the public reduces significantly, but you are always welcome to come to see us in the evenings. We will be open every Tuesday and Thursday over the summer from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. Stop by and see what we have. Memberships are only $5/adult and $10/family. Plus, with the TRAC card, you are able to visit other libraries and borrow resources as well. We will go back to our regular school hours, being open to the public on Tuesday, September 3rd. Have a great summer!

Any files saved on their personal share drive (Z:) will need to be downloaded prior to the last day of classes on June 28. Any content in their Google accounts will need to be downloaded prior to September 1. Google files can be downloaded individually or in bulk with Google Takeout, https://takeout.google.com. All remaining information will be deleted and access to these accounts will be deactivated after these dates. For more information, contact the school at 780-365-3501
